'Tis a good series. Alas, my Latin is likewise not up to the task. I only ever had a year of Latin to begin with, and it's been a few years since I've put it to any real use. My ancient Greek is in a similar boat (with 1.5 years and no real practice since) so the Patrologia Graeca is similarly off-limits for me.

Thanks for the compliment, David. The Bede reference comes from the Patralogia Latina (93:42), though the translation I quote comes from InterVarsity Press' Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture series, Volume XI (on James, 1-2 Peter, 1-3 John, and Jude). I simplified it a very little for the sake of my audience (substituting "who loved us" for Bede's original "who loved our life").

Hi Matthew:

Just read over your post up there in Canada and took a look at some of the comments. Does look like the internet is not the best place to "evengelize".

While I understand your point in the article in the National Post, perhaps yo u might look at another approach for some future expository in the same forum: "Don't Shoot the Messenger Who Bears Good News!" Our mission as Christians is to spread the "good news" just as the saints did in their time. Not all believed, some were opposed, and a few received the Word and were saved. When Jesus sent the disciples out to evangelize in pairs, he told them to go and witness to those who would let them in to their houses. If they did not believe, they were to knock the dust from their sandals on the way out. Much to explore along the idea of spreading the Good News, but not all will listen--but we must still try. We know we will be persecuted, just as Christ was--he told us as much. And this from the beggining of the Church to the end of the age. Perhaps we should enjoy our persecution as a badge of honor--humbly so, but with hope for the life to come.

Just a thought...
